CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

The fae prince’s old-time car looked right at home as Ma pulled up to the sidewalk outside the famous auto shop. Hot rods, foreign sports cars, and expensive motorcycles were parked around them.

Poly snapped her fingers as Ma put the car in park. “This is one of those garages from one of those Pimp My Ride kinds of shows, isn’t it?”

Ma killed the engine. “You watch car shows?”

“Sometimes, yeah. Part of flexing my muse mind is exposing myself to as many different cultural experiences as possible. Flipping rapid-fire through TV channels with my face an inch from the screen is one of my favorite ways of filling my creative well.” She paused. “Scrolling through Instagram and TikTok is good too. Hey, you do have your own Instagram and TikTok, right?”

“Why would I do that?”

“For the free publicity! You’re a future Hollywood star. People would adore that face and body of yours.”

“I’ll think about it.” Ma hated social media. She wasn’t good at it.

“Don’t sweat it,” Poly said. “I’ll prepare a special muse lesson for you called Social Media for Upcoming Stars. You’ll thank me.”

“If you say so.” Ma tucked the car keys into her pocket. As the two of them got out, Porla peeked out from her basket tucked under Ma’s arm. They walked toward the garage. When they were closer, a garage door slid up.

After it raised all the way, a hulking figure stood in the opening, highlighted by the bright sun. Then a minotaur wearing a gold chain, a muscle tee, and cargo pants stepped out to meet them.

Mini looked great. He was in the best shape Ma had ever seen and had polished his horns to a shine. Even though his appearance was intimidating, he carried his body with a confident, friendly vibe.

For kicks, Ma mentally lowered the Veil to see what a human would see when they looked at him. Mini looked like a handsome, chiseled bouncer or Special Forces operative. Beside her, Poly was all but fawning over him. Ma raised the Veil and snapped her fingers in front of Poly’s face.

Ma stepped forward to meet Mini. The minotaur was the first to speak.

“Hey.”

“Hey,” she replied.

Mini looked her up and down and carefully surveyed the street around them. Then he jerked a thumb at the open garage door behind him.

Ma and Poly followed him in, and he shut and locked the garage door from the inside.

“What’s with the secrecy?” Ma asked. She had noted the caution in his eyes as he surveyed the street outside.

Mini’s eyes twitched. “They’re everywhere.”

Poly nudged Ma in the ribs. “Is he paranoid?” she whispered. In the silence of the expansive garage, Mini probably heard her.

He hadn’t been paranoid before. Had someone tried to kidnap him too? “Who is everywhere?” Ma asked uneasily.

The minotaur’s nostrils flared, and his eyes grew intense. His next word was like a curse.

“Paparazzi.”
